Educational Uses of Podcasting
One of these is the ability to allow teachers or professors accessibility to their pupils through the Internet, allowing information to be shared between teacher and student on an as needed basis. This gives students, who may have had some type of misunderstanding during a lesson or lecture, the opportunity to virtually 'go back' and replay the lesson or lecture. Lectures through podcasting or some other sort of recordable medium have proven to be a great learning device for students of all ages. Quite easily students, at any time of the day or night, can replay a lesson or lecture, giving them complete control of their studying environment. Podcasts simply make it much easier for teachers or professors to ensure that all students are available for a lesson, particularly in the online academic arena. Podcasting has also provided a way for teachers or professors to provide resources to their pupils. In many current college programs professors are providing reading material to their students in the form of listening material through podcasts. Pre-recorded lectures and lessons are available to help students further their academic careers without the formality of taking classes. In a fast-paced society the ability to learn a foreign language through podcasting and on your own time can be a blessing. An additional aspect and use of podcasting that has sprung up is virtual study groups. While virtual study groups have existed since the dawn of the Internet through the use of chat rooms and, later, face-to-face video chat study groups, it has never existed quite like this. Currently there are thousands of students that no longer 'meet' for study groups; they file share. The way a podcast study group functions is like this: Each of the students in the group studies the material and records their response. Each student's response is then sent to a file-sharing site and, at the leisure of the student, they can compare notes. Often any notes the student may have taken, giving complete access to the lesson from multiple viewpoints, also accompany these podcast study sessions. But it is probably the freedoms that this type of study group allows that makes it so popular, as these files, pre-recorded lessons, and lectures can all be listened to at the discretion of the student.
